British firm unveils “Carkoon” – the cocoon baby seat

A revolutionary baby seat that deploys a protective cocoon in collisions has been unveiled by a British firm.

The Carkoon is a rear-facing baby seat that features a sliding protective shell made from Kevlar and fireproof Nomex, which is capable of keeping a child safe for up to 18 minutes in the event of a blaze. The Carkoon alsocontains a transmitter that alerts emergency services with the exact GPS location of the child – giving vital extra information for any rescue effort.

Added to the design is a rotating base and “quick release” handle that saves messing about with seatbelts for rapid ejection. The cocoon shell is also highly resistant to collisions and will only deploy in extreme circumstances thanks to an embedded gyroscopic magnitude sensor that detects when a vehicle is tipped back or forward.

Revolutionary Car Seat Cocoons Children

‘Carkoon’ a university-based life saving company has unveiled an innovative new car seat for babies and children that offers more protection in the event of a vehicle collision by literally cocooning the child.
Carkoon offers an extra layer of protection when detecting a collision by deploying a quirky, shell-like cover that is fire resistant and activates in 50 milliseconds.

The egg-shaped seat has also incorporated ‘swivel’ technology that allows parents to fasten the child’s seatbelt while sitting in the driver or passenger seat – allowing them to turn the seat to a safer rear view position after securing the child.
The seat even boasts an ‘Emergency Beacon Transmitter’ that allows a GPS to automatically alert the emergency services to your location.

“With our rapidly advancing motor industry, cars are becoming faster and further advanced in their safety aspects, but car seats are not moving at the same pace – until now,” said the creators.

The baby cocoon: Seat will wrap child in bubble if car crashes protecting infants from fire and dialling 999

A car seat that cocoons a baby in a protective shell in the event of an accident has been unveiled by British engineers.

The rear-facing Carkoon is also fireproof, providing the child with up to 20 minutes of air and insulating it from a blaze.

And for easy release in an accident –  or during an everyday trip to the supermarket or nursery – the seat can be swivelled round to face the door, so the child can be easily unbuckled and lifted out.

The Carkoon could be on sale as early as next year but, at around £499, will be considerably more expensive than a standard child seat.

Carkoon: Kevlar car seat envelops child in fireproof cocoon

British company Cool Technologies has unveiled a car seat that wraps a child in a protective bubble and calls emergency services. The Carkoon is made of Kevlar, the same material used in body armor. In an accident, it deploys a Kevlar and fireproof Nomex air bag. The air bag covers the entire seat and can withstand impact from flying objects. A transmitter signals emergency services with GPS coordinates and details of the accident. The Carkoon could go on sale as early as next year and will sell for about £499.
