So the dust has finally settled after the events at WWDC 2012, so
what is new on the software front? Well, iOS 6 has been previewed, where
it will come with all new Maps, Siri features, Facebook integration,
shared photo streams as well as a new Passbook app. Touted to be the
most powerful iOS version and most advanced mobile operating system yet,
iOS 6 comes with more than 200 new features, with a beta version being
released already to iOS Developer Program members.
iOS 6 will be made available to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users
later this fall in the form of a free software update (as usual), and we
shall take a closer look at what kind of new features that iOS 6 will
carry when you apply the update.
For starters, it seems that Apple has weaned themselves off from
their dependency on Google for the Maps application, and their take on
what navigation on your mobile device should be like include
Apple-designed cartography, bringing along with it turn-by-turn
navigation and an amazing new Flyover view. Basically, you will be able
to enjoy 3D maps whenever you zoom in on a particular area on the map.
Not only that, Siri will also come with features, where this voice
assistant app now includes support for more languages, easy access to
sports scores, restaurant recommendations and movie listings. Don’t you
think that talking to your smartphone is going to be a whole lot more
productive and fun?
As for Facebook integration, well you get integration with Contacts
and Calendar, in addition to the ability to post directly from
Notification Center, Siri and Facebook-enabled apps such as Photos,
Safari and Maps.
Scott Forstall, Apple’s senior vice president of iOS Software, said,
“iOS 6 continues the rapid pace of innovation that is helping Apple
reinvent the phone and create the iPad category, delivering the best
mobile experience available on any device. We can’t wait for hundreds of
millions of iOS users to experience the incredible new features in iOS 6
including the new Maps app, expanded Siri support, deep Facebook
integration, Shared Photo Streams and the innovative new Passbook app.”
Are you looking forward to what iOS 6 is able to bring?
