Softbank offers smartphones with radiation detectors

More than a year after the Fukushima crisis hit Japan, there is still much work to be done in rebuilding that area of Japan. Having said that, with so many potentially radioactive accidents waiting to happen in an earthquake prone nation like Japan with nuclear plants dotted all around the country, what are the odds of being right smack in the middle of a radiation hotspot without you knowing it? Well, your smartphone might do more than just handle your emails, calls and text messages, as phone operator Softbank is said to start offering smartphones with built-in radiation detectors that will be sensitive enough to check out whether the area you are in is safe and free from dangerous levels of radiation or not.

Even more than a year after that, there are still segments of northeastern Japan that remain off-limits due to high radiation levels. According to Softbank founder and president, Masayoshi Son, “The threat from the nuclear accident cannot be seen by the human eye and continues to be a concern for many people, especially for mothers with small children.”
